The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

Vincent Price stars as a famous organist who is brutally disfigured in a car accident. When he discovers that his wife died mid-surgery, he goes on a creative and colorful murder spree to exact revenge on all of the doctors who let her die. With lavish production design, excellent costume work and fantastic kills, this strange gem is truly deserving of more attention.

Angel's Egg (1985)

Selected by Orchid Morgana

A young girl wanders through a desolate world with nothing but a large mysterious egg. The film is a loose, surrealist piece, but is striking and profound in its themes. Its beautiful visuals and gorgeous score drenches you in its atmosphere. It's no wonder Angel's Egg is considered one of the greatest animated films of all time, by those who have seen it.

The Bride of Frankenstein(1935)

Selected by Jimmy Thatch

The Sequel to the classic original, Bride of Frankenstein is just better! It's the oldest one on the list by far, but it's still super cool and worth your time. Boris Karloff is awesome and it's one that gets better and better each time you rewatch it. Essential viewing if you wanna call yourself a horror fan.

Carnival of Souls (1962)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

Vintage indie horror filmmaking bliss. Young organist Mary's descent into madness propted after she survives a deadly car accident. Instead of murder, she chooses to wistfully wander around strange liminal spaces. However, she is being stalked by a mysterious otherworldly ghoul that torments her at every turn. Excellent in so many ways, it probably influenced most of your favorite modern horror movies in one way or another.

Creepshow (1982)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

Debatably the greatest anthology horror film ever made. There isn't much competition, but that's no slate against Creepshow. Based on the controversial EC horror comics of the 1950s, Creepshow knows exactly what it is and is here to have the most fun possible with it's premise and source material. Highlights include a severed head on a cake, an alien moss fungus, a so-bad-it's-good performance by the legendary Stephen King, and much more that you need to see for yourself.

The Fifth Element (1997)

Selected by Jimmy Thatch

An action packed Sci-Fi joyride. The Fifth Element is AWESOME! A space story that never at any point feels derivative of other space films, The Fifth Element has too many iconic moments and characters to count. It actually reminds me a ton of the Wachowski sisters' films in its energy and colorful-ness! Not one you're gonna wanna miss.

Godzilla (1954)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

A god incarnate and a city doomed. The classic original Godzilla towers above its contemporaries as a shining golden standard of monsters and metaphors. Godzilla artistically reflected the horrors of war and allowed it's grieving country to be able to process its tragedies through art. Godzilla sparked an entire movement of kaiju cinema, replicated around the world, and it continues to be remade, reinterpreted, and re-lived to this very day.

HOUSE (1977)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

HOUSE. Where do you even begin with HOUSE? A gorgeous, horrifying, hilarious journey through the world's weirdest haunted house. Words do not do House justice, it must be seen to be believed. It's kinda like Jaws, in the sense that it's absolutely nothing like Jaws. Maybe we should let 10 year olds write all of our movies. The results speak for themselves. WATCH HOUSE.

Jason and the Argonauts (1963)

Selected by Jimmy Thatch

Essential Skeleton movie! Did you know that this is one of the defining moments for Skeletons in cinema history? It's the first time a major big budget Hollywood movie included prominent Skeleton characters! They're more prominent in the VYU version apparently. They're still very cool in this one! Good stuff, a real watch-with-your-Dad kinda film.

Mirrormask (2005)

Selected by Orchid Morgana

Alas! Mirrormask is the forgotten third film in the Henson fantasy trilogy of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. Bet you didn't know it was a trilogy huh? Unfortunately, the film was remotely impossible to find for nearly a decade, a physical release will cost you about $50+ now! The film itself is a mysterious retelling of Labyrinth with a truly bizarre visual style. Made by an entire team of first-time filmmakers, it was a miracle that Mirrormask was ever released to begin with. Such a shame it is virtually unheard of today.

Pearl (2022)

Selected by Orchid Morgana

A24's Pearl doubles as a campy slasher and an intimate character study of a young farmhand and aspiring actress who's aspirations lead her to murder. It's an instant classic that delivers golden-age-musical-style visuals and is carried by Mia Goth's legendary performance.

Phantom of the Paradise(1974)

Selected by Jimmy Thatch

Phantom of the Paradise figgin rules. Way better than another certain 70's campy rock musical, Phantom of the Paradise retells Phantom of the Opera, and Faust! 2 for the price of one baby! Killer score, killer sets, and a killer story, this Phantom's got it all. Extra points for all of the rad analog tech.

Rango (2011)

Selected by Jimmy Thatch

The spirit of the west, baby! A lizard's bizarre adventure through a western town populated by some really ugly animals. Rango's clear vision and mature execution has yet to be matched in the realm of animation in my opinion. Some really wild dream sequences too. Yeah, Rango rules! Give it a watch, you won't regret it.

A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

From the renowned director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, School of Rock, Waking Life), A Scanner Darkly is an exploration of the sinister effect of a futuristic nightmare drug. The most striking feature of this film that sets it apart from other Sci-Fi novel adaptations is its use of rotoscope animation. The technique brings the film to life in such a vivid and fascinating way, and also works narratively as a genius way to convey the psychological effects of drug use. As an added bonus, Keanu Reeves!

The Skeleton of Mrs. Morales (1960)

Selected by Maria Romero

This film is near and dear to the hearts of the Los Deselatos family because it is the film that founded our organization! Ages ago, when this film was perceived as missing, I encouraged the copyright owners to find a way to resurrect it. After a year of preservation work, the Skeleton of Mrs. Morales could be saved and truly shine in all of its mystery and excellence. A simple yet striking thriller, it tells the simple story of a taxidermist who decides to murder his wife. It is a shining gem in Mexican horror filmmaking.

I'm sure it is available somewhere, you're going to have to search for it, like I did so many years ago...

Suspiria (1977)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

Dario Argento's masterpiece, Suspiria is a striking horror experience. A downpour of blood and atmosphere, complete with Goblin's unforgettable score. From start to finish, Suspiria balances art and terror in lyrical grace. One of our biggest recommendations from this list. Suspiria is absolutely brilliant.

The Visitor (1979)

Selected by Marcus Anderson

For our last film, we have a surreal Italian sci-fi movie from the late 70's. The Visitor is a complete ripoff of "The Omen", but shows a lot of its own strange stylistic identity throughout. The true star of the film is Franco Micalizzi's score. Another movie where a lot of weird stuff just sorta happens. It's alright. Visually, its pretty good! Great regarding its sights and sounds, not so much its story.
